The Black Population Health Research Group (Race.ID) was founded in 2021 by students of Medicine and Physiotherapy courses and doctors at the HCFMUSP Complex, with the support of Profa. Ana Claudia Germani, from the Department of Preventive Medicine at Faculdade de Medicina da Universitade de São Paulo (FMUSP), held the II Symposium on Research in Health of the Black Population on March 24 and 25, 2023.

The choice of date for the event was due to the International Day for the Fight for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21), with the production of a video that presents dreams and actions for the elimination of discrimination. There was also a pre-symposium activity, the course “An introduction to incorporating anti-racist approaches in public health research”, taught on March 22 by researcher Jourdyn Lawrence, from Drexel University.

The theme chosen for the Symposium was “Anti-racist Training of Health Professionals” and was honored by nurse Eloá Pimenta, who dedicates a large part of her life to defending the SUS, in the search for equity in Health for the black population and, currently, is part of the National Articulation of Black Nursing (ANEN).

The Organizing Committee, made up of 16 members, articulated a partnership with speakers from 12 institutions, among which: Luís Eduardo Batista, Technical Advisor to the Office of the Ministry of Health, Ana Bechara, from PRIP-USP, Calila das Mercês Oliveira, from IEA- USP, Débora Medeiros de Andrade, from Diversitas/FFLCH/USP, Renata Souza Gonçalves, from PST/IPUSP, Viviane Nogueira da Silva, from DTLLC/FFLCH/USP, Alessandro de Oliveira dos Santos, from IPUSP, Luana Natielle Basílio e Silva, from UNFPA, Débora de Souza Santos, from UNICAMP, and Rosana Batista Monteiro, from UFSCAR. Student Isabella Nascimento Figueiredo, from UNESP, international guest Jourdyn Lawrence, as well as Larissa Alexandre and Júlio César de Oliveira, both from HCFMUSP, who brought contributions from RACE.ID, also participated.The program was divided into three axes: “Black Students: Mental Health, Belonging and Access”, “Guidelines”, “Theoretical and Methodological Basis of Research in Anti-Racist Education”.

On March 25, there was a conference with Fátima Freire Dowbor on “The dimensions of education that mark the body” and in the afternoon, cultural activities were organized to close the event. The participants were divided into two groups to take part in the guided tour of the USP Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) and the Afro Sampa Walking Tour, which started in the Liberdade neighborhood, which passed through landmarks of the memory of the black population in São Paulo and ended in a conversation about Health and Education at Educafro.

With 411 registrations, involving undergraduate and graduate students, teachers and professionals working in the care network, the event was broadcast live on the research group's YouTube channel and was attended by participants at the FMUSP Theater.
