The Kids Save Lives Brazil Project has integrated the World Restart a Heart world campaign with activities during the week of the World Restart a Heart Day, celebrated on October 16th. The initiative was held at the Hospital das Clínicas Complex, at the Medical School of USP, at the USP Buntatã Campus and in schools around São Paulo.
Using high fidelity mannequins and AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator), the Kids Save Lives Brazil team, coordinated by Professors Naomi Kondo Nakagawa and Maria José Carmona, has offered training for initial care and basic notions of BLS (Basic Life Support) in cases of cardiorespiratory arrest.
The training occurred in the public spaces of the FMUSP building, the FOFITO (Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy), InCor, ICHC and the Civil Polytechnic School of USP, with the participation of professors, students, patients, collaborators and authorities. During the week, there were also trainings in state and city schools of the State of São Paulo.
Prof. Naomi Kondo, coordinator of the Kids Save Lives Brazil, declares the population lacks information on how to act in case of a cardiorespiratory arrest, but “every public, from children to the elderly population, seek information relating to health. The participation of the population during the actions of the week was meaningful. In a matter of minutes, people can understand how to deal with emergency situations”.
According to Prof. Naomi, new actions and training are being developed aiming to spread information. The orientation for initial actions in a situation of cardiorespiratory arrest is very important. One of these actions is a training, in the same models of the World Restart a Heart campaign, at the Vila Prudente subway station in São Paulo.
The World Restart a Heart Day world campaign is an initiative of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation, and it’s supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and, in Brazil, the action was led by Kids Save Lives Brazil. Besides the support of the Medical School of USP, the action counted on the backing of the Bauru Campus USP, UNICAMP, UNIFESP, FURG (Federal University of Rio Grande), the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the Society of Anesthesiology of Minas Gerais, and of Dr. Sergio Timerman. All of them have developed action during the week of the World Restart a Heart world campaign.
