The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) communicates with regret the death of Prof. Carlos Alberto Salvatore, which took place this Thursday, February 17, at the age of 104. The vigil and burial took place yesterday, at the Morumbi Cemetery.
Born on April 19, 1917, Salvatore learned to play the piano in his childhood, a habit he maintained until the end of his life. A historical figure in Brazilian Medicine, the gynecologist graduated from the fifth class of the Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM), which he joined in 1937. In all, he spent 64 years dedicated to Medicine - 42 of these within the Hospital das Clínicas FMUSP (HCFMUSP).
After some time working at the Butantan Institute, he was invited to establish a 70-bed gynecological clinic at the HC, inaugurated in 1948. He was a Full Professor at FMUSP until his retirement in 1987, when he became Professor Emeritus. At that time, he restructured and expanded services, being responsible for creating, organizing and leading the medical residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics, in 1965.
Prof. Carlos Alberto Salvatore had an extensive scientific production, with more than 250 works, dozens of them in foreign journals. He also published 16 books, including three Atlas of Gynecological Surgery.
He was awarded several honors, including the Anchieta medal and the diploma of Gratitude of the City of São Paulo, granted by the São Paulo City Council. He is also a recipient of the Republican Order of Merit of the Brazilian Academy of History and founder of the São Paulo Academy of Medicine, where he held chair number 19.
