The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) announces with regret the death of Prof. doctor Nelson Fontana Margarido, Retired Head of the Discipline of Human Structural Topography, of the Department of Surgery at FMUSP, on January 8, 2023.
FMUSP pays homage to Prof. doctor Nelson Fontana Margarido, known to the entire generation of students who passed through during his work as a teacher. His irreproachable attitude, his care with teaching and his dedication to FMUSP will never be forgotten by those who shared this period with him. We appreciate the knowledge transmitted to the students and emphasize the importance of a masterful professor! We cannot forget the past and who wrote it. Rest in peace, Professor! Biography
Nelson Fontana Margarido was born in São Paulo – capital, on October 27, 1941. He graduated from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), in 1966. He did residency in a surgical clinic at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP, in the service of Professor Eurico da Silva Bastos. During the medical course he practiced swimming and water polo. He began his teaching activities at FMUSP, in July 1969, at the Department of Surgery, in the Discipline of Surgical Technique.
In 1971, he defended his doctoral thesis; in February 1978, after a public contest, he defended his full professorship in surgical technique, always in the Department of Surgery at FMUSP. In 2010, after a public contest, he became Full Professor at the Department of Surgery at FMUSP, in the Discipline of Human Structural Topography.
Nelson Fontana Margarido developed his professional activities at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo. As a university professor, from 1980 to 1990, and from 2001, he was Full Professor of Surgical Technique at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Mogi das Cruzes (SP).
He enjoyed great prestige among medical students, so much so that he was elected paranymph five times, and three times patron of FMUSP graduating classes. At the Faculty of Medicine of Mogi das Cruzes, he was once elected patron of graduates.
He took an active part in the Brazilian School of Surgeons (Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões), both in the São Paulo Chapter, where he held various management positions, and in the National Board, where he was twice elected national Vice-President.
As a professor, Nelson Fontana Margarido wrote 13 textbooks, as editor or main author, always on surgical topics. He is the author of more than 50 surgical textbook chapters. He was a researcher and had intense participation in congresses and scientific journeys throughout the country, with more than 250 presentations, which earned him 23 national awards and an international award.
As a professor and researcher, he guided countless colleagues to obtain master 's and doctoral degrees, both at FMUSP, the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and the University of Mogi das Cruzes.
He was the first to assume chair nº 82 of the Academy of Medicine of São Paulo, on April 2, 1982. In the 2011-2012 biennium, he collaborated in the direction of the entity, in the position of 2nd treasurer.
