In 2022, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) will complete 110 years fulfilling its role in the development of education, research and community outreach, with pioneering spirit and excellence. To publicize and highlight this date, officially celebrated on December 19, the Institution launched a new exclusive anniversary logomark, which will be applied to all its visual communication materials throughout the year.

According to Prof. André Mota, of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Coordinator of the University’s Historical Museum, the new anniversary has “great significance, as it shows the Institution at a special moment”. In addition to highlighting the increase in diversity in the student body and the maintenance of the Faculty as a democratic space, he mentions the role of FMUSP and Hospital das Clínicas during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Faculty was able to face, with great commitment, quality and technology a moment of international crisis”, says the Professor. “The way FMUSP has helped and is continuing to help Brazil to face the pandemic, for me, is perhaps the great historical mark of these 110 years.”

Find out more about the elements that make up FMUSP’s new symbol and a little more about the University’s history.

Pinheiros campus

Keeping the characteristics of its original architecture despite the renovations and modernizations over time, the front view of the Pinheiros campus, with its 3 main buildings (Central Building or "Casa de Arnaldo", Faculty Library and Theater), appears at the top of the logo. Inaugurated in 1931, the campus currently has about 44,000 square meters of built area and houses facilities such as the Oscar Freire Institute (IOF), the Technical Division of Support for Teaching, Research and Innovation (DTAPEPI), the Institute of Tropical Medicine ( IMT), Medical Research Laboratories (LIMs), Library and Administration Building. Added to this space is an area of 6,000 square meters, located in Cidade Universitária, where part of the courses are taught.

Medicine

FMUSP offers five undergraduate courses: Medicine, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Medical Physics (the newest course, offered in partnership between FMUSP and the Institute of Physics of USP). The Faculty has approximately 1,400 students at the school, more than 1,00 employees, of which 368 are professors; 2,000 graduate students and 1,600 residents. The average is 2,500 scientific articles published per year. It has the largest hospital in Latin America - Hospital das Clínicas, with over one million outpatient consultations per year, over 232,000 urgent and emergency calls per year, and over 50,000 surgeries per year.

USP

Founded under the name of Faculdade de Medicina e Cirurgia de São Paulo (Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of São Paulo) by Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho (1867-1920), the College is still called "House of Arnaldo" by its students and former students. In 1925, its name was changed to Faculdade de Medicina de São Paulo and, in 1934, it was incorporated into the newly created University of São Paulo (USP), changing to its current name (FMUSP). This integration officially took place on January 25, 1934.

110 years

In 1912, the decree creating the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of São Paulo was signed. The inaugural class took place in April 1913 and, since then, FMUSP's mission has focused on undergraduate and graduate education, research, culture and extension of services to the community. It has been working for 110 years in the training of health professionals with solid general education, in-depth basic study, training in the three levels of health care (primary, secondary and tertiary) and high ethical and humanist values.
