Professor Esper Georges Kallás, Head of the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Department of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), was awarded the medal of the Assis Brasil Order of Merit of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), in the Grau Comendador, in a ceremony held on March 28, 2022, at the Noble Hall of the Electoral Court, in Brasília.
Professor Esper said that he helped the TSE, at the request of Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, offered medical-scientific support to minimize the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the 2020 elections. He declared: “helping in the consolidation of democracy, through a free electoral process, strengthens institutions, our society and Brazil”.
The TSE Order of Merit medal bears the name of the lawyer and politician Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil, who was one of the mentors of the Brazilian Electoral Justice. It exists since 2015 and, in addition to honoring jurists, it recognizes the merit of other personalities who have contributed with relevant activities in favor of Electoral Justice and Law.
“I fulfilled my role as a citizen and public servant, always having the responsibility to represent the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo and Hospital das Clínicas, in the best possible way. With this, I believe that the decoration reflects the recognition of the fundamental role of our Institution and in the face of the pandemic", said Professor Esper Kallás.
