Prof. Ivan Dieb Miziara, of Legal Medicine, Medical Social Ethics and Work Department of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP), took office as the new Full Member of Academia Nacional de Medicina Legal (National Academy of Legal Medicine - ANML), at a meeting held on April 27, 2022.

The main responsibility of a member of the ANML is intertwined with the attributions of the Academy itself - the highest scientific body of the specialty, which are: the improvement, dissemination of ideas and the awakening of interest in the study and research in Forensic Medicine; draw attention to the importance of Forensic Medicine in undergraduate and graduate courses, both in Medicine and Law courses. And also to encourage and disseminate theoretical and practical teaching, in addition to stimulating the production and publication of scientific works in the medico-legal area; promote meetings, courses and other events to bring together professionals from different sectors with the aim of debating topics related to Forensic Medicine; serve as a consultative body; and to be the guardian of the medico-legal doctrine.

Prof. Ivan Miziara said that the feeling of becoming a member of the ANML is one of great joy, “mainly because the chair, to which I was elected, has as its patron the greatest master of Brazilian Legal Medicine - Flamínio Fávero, who succeeded Oscar Freire as full professor (at the time) at our school, reaching the FMUSP Board of Directors”.

Prof. Ivan stated: “In my professional and academic career, I have held positions as Director-General of the Legal Medical Institute of the State of São Paulo (2013-2015) and Superintendent of Technical-Scientific Police (2015-2019), and I have always had as a star- guide and a north to follow the immense figure of Flamínio Fávero”.

Prof. Ivan Miziara points out that “the ANML is an institution of an eminently scientific nature and it houses some of the main indoctrinators of current Brazilian Legal Medicine, such as professors Genival Veloso de França and Higino de Carvalho Hércules, among others”.

On the occasion of the ceremony, two more professionals were elected full members, they are: Dr. Chu-En-Lay Paes Leme and Dr. Maximiano Leite Barbosa Chaves.

Brief CV of Prof. Ivan Dieb Miziara

Graduated at FMUSP in 1982, he did a medical residency in Otorhinolaryngology at Hospital das Clínicas, doctorate and professor at FMUSP. In 1986, he applied to the Legal Medical Institute of the State of São Paulo, from which he retired in 2019, having been the first doctor to head (as Superintendent) the IML and the Instituto the Criminalística for a period of four years. In 2013, he was approved in the competition for professor at FMUSP, currently holding the position of Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Legal Medicine, Medical Ethics and Social and Work Medicine at FMUSP. He is Professor of Forensic Medicine and Bioethics at the Faculdade de Medicina do ABC and Adjunct Professor, Coordinator of the Discipline of Legal Medicine and Bioethics and of the Discipline of Bioethics and Patient Safety at the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo. He holds specialist degrees in Legal Medicine and Medical Expertise and in Otorhinolaryngology of the Associação Médica Brasileira, as well as a Specialization in Bioethics and Occupational Medicine at FMUSP.
